SAP WM is being retired. Here's what that actually means for your warehouse.

SAP has confirmed that classic Warehouse Management (WM) is being phased out in favour of SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM). This isn't a distant roadmap item — it's a live deadline with different cut-off dates depending on how you run S/4HANA, and it affects budget, staffing and go-live planning for every business still on WM.

Why Stock Room Management usually isn't the answer

StRM keeps the basic warehousing functions alive, but it drops the advanced capabilities many operations quietly depend on — wave management, cross-docking, cartonization planning, and integration with automated material handling (AS/RS, AGVs, conveyor and robotics). If your warehouse uses any of these today, converting to StRM is a functionality downgrade dressed up as a compliance fix.

For most mid-to-large operations, the sustainable path is a proper move to SAP EWM — either embedded within S/4HANA (included in the S/4HANA licence, best for single-ERP landscapes) or decentralized (a separate licensed instance, built for high-volume, high-automation sites that need to run close to the equipment on the floor).

What a low-risk migration actually requires

The technical conversion from WM to EWM is not a button — it's a new implementation, and it lives or dies on readiness, not on configuration alone:
